With their dreams realized, they embarked on the long and arduous journey back home, eager to reunite with their families and enjoy the fruits of their labor.
Their path led them through the expansive lands of Oklahoma, where they eventually camped near the Black Dog Trail Crossing on the banks of the Arkansas River. Little did they know that their dreams of a triumphant return were about to be shattered.
As dusk settled, casting long shadows across the plains, the Virginians found themselves face to face with an approaching Osage war party. Outnumbered and with no hope of escape, they made a desperate decision. Knowing that the gold would only invite further danger, they quickly buried their precious pouches near the riverbank. In a hurried attempt to mark the spot, they wedged a broken rifle in the fork of a nearby tree, hoping it would serve as a guide for their future return.
Tragedy Strikes
The encounter that followed was swift and brutal. The Osage warriors, fiercely protective of their land and resources, launched a fierce attack.
