They dug a shaft, hoping to unearth the legendary strongbox.
However, fate, or perhaps the river itself, seemed determined to thwart their efforts. Torrential spring rains descended upon the area, causing devastating cave-ins that trapped and killed some of the men working in the shaft. The tragedy, coupled with dwindling funds, forced the company to abandon their search, leaving the treasure still hidden beneath the Oklahoma soil.
